Buena Vista's Back Roads, Minus the Wind and the Altitude

BV eBikes hands you a fat-tire e-bike for three hours and sends you out on your own. The motor is there for the two things that end rides early in this valley, the altitude and the wind, and the staff pick a road to match what you can actually ride.

Ride the back roads out of Buena Vista.

There is no bike path in Buena Vista. The shop says so on its own rides page, then lists the three back roads it sends renters down instead: north through the old Midland railway tunnels, out into the Fourmile Recreation Area, or up to Cottonwood Lake.

E-bikes are not allowed on the Town of Buena Vista's non-motorized single track trails. The shop's rental terms add that the BLM and the Forest Service restrict e-bikes to roads and trails that allow motorized vehicles. So the routes the shop sends you down are county roads. That reads like a limitation until you are on one of these bikes. The motor turns a headwind into something you stop noticing, and it takes the sting out of a grade that thin air makes feel steeper than it is.

The listing below is the three-hour rental. A bike sized to you, a helmet, a bottle of water, and a run-through of the controls before you roll away. The booking is private, so the bikes are yours and nobody is joining you.

The Three Roads They Actually Send You Down

The tunnels ride runs north out of town on Chaffee County Road 371, an abandoned Colorado Midland Railway grade that still bores straight through the rock above the Arkansas River. The shop calls this one the beginner route and the one that works with families, and it keeps a downloadable map for it.

County Road 375, inside the Fourmile Recreation Area, is the middle option. Cottonwood Lake is the third, and the shop says it will lay out a route that bypasses most of the highway to get you there. There are picnic tables at the lake, and the Forest Service charges a day-use fee to use that picnic area from May through September. Pack something to eat and a way to pay it.

The shop puts a typical ride at fifteen to twenty miles. Three hours is the window, and the staff will point you at a road that fits inside it.

What Happens Before You Ride Away

Nobody hands you a key and waves you off. The shop fits a bike to your height, walks you through the controls, and gives you a bit of practice in the lot first. The listing sets a minimum rider height, so check it against the shortest rider in your group.

A helmet and a bottle of water come with the booking, and the shop sends renters out with a lock as well. It writes on its own etiquette page that no law here requires a helmet, and then puts one on every bike anyway.

If it has been years since you were last on a bicycle, say so when you book. The shop's own answer to that is to set aside extra instruction time for you.

Who These Bikes Fit, and Who They Do Not

The listing sets a minimum rider age and a weight limit, and both are worth checking before you book. The bikes are heavy and adult sized, which is why the shop asks that any child on one already be competent on a bicycle. Its words are that an e-bike is not the way to introduce a kid to cycling.

The shop does keep a kids trailer, a pet trailer, and a tag-along that clips to an adult bike, so a child too small to ride solo still has a way to come along.

Closed-toed shoes make the whole thing better. Bring a backpack if you are going out for the full window, because there are long stretches of road here with no restroom, no water and no food. The listing also flags the ride as a poor fit for anyone with cardiovascular trouble, thin air being what it is.

Weather, the Clock, and Sharing the Road

Afternoon showers are common through the summer here, and the shop recommends riding early. On a three-hour window that advice costs you nothing to follow.

The booking window on this listing closes at 4:00 PM the day before you ride, and confirmation comes back instantly. For a same-day bike, contact the shop directly. Cancel at least twenty-four hours before your start time for a full refund.

These bikes will do twenty miles an hour, which is the number the shop cites when it asks riders to think twice about bringing a dog along. Out on the public land there is wildlife and there are other people's pets, and the shop asks that dogs stay leashed. Ride single file and keep right. Elk and moose are the two it names, and neither wants you close.

📍 The shop is on Linderman Avenue, a block off the light on Main Street and right next to the public library. Parking is on the south side of the building, and 111 Linderman Avenue will get you there.

Katie and Darin Carl bought the place from Rick and Nancy Fox in November 2023, and one of them will likely be the person adjusting your seat height.

You leave from that lot and you come back to it. What happens in between is whichever road you picked, at whatever speed the motor and your legs end up agreeing on.
