Buena Vista Park
4.6 (2,352)park
San Francisco’s oldest park pairs hilltop skyline views with wooded trails lined with recycled cemetery headstones.
Description

Perched on a hill across the Haight-Ashbury and Buena Vista neighborhoods, the park weaves a dense network of shaded paths beneath Monterey cypresses, eucalyptus, and live oaks. Historic stone stairways climb toward panoramic viewpoints framing downtown, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Pacific Ocean. Along trailside gutters and drainages, fragments of carved marble remain visible: during citywide cemetery removals from 1914 through the 1940s, unclaimed headstones were recycled into the park’s infrastructure.
