Booked for the North Shore, Meeting on Oahu's East Side

The listing sells a North Shore surf lesson. The address you will actually drive to sits on the windward coast at Hauula. Sunset Suzy teaches at two different beaches and picks one on the day, and that choice is the reason beginners still get a lesson here in the months when Oahu's most famous waves are closing out.

Take a surf lesson at Hauula on the windward side.

Oahu's North Shore is the part of the island most visitors can already name. Haleiwa. Pipeline. Waimea Bay. This lesson is sold under that heading, and then the booking details give an address on the opposite coast.

The meeting point is 53-360 Kamehameha Highway in Hauula, on the windward side of Oahu. The operator's own directions in the listing tell you to take the H-3 freeway around the island and come down the east side to that address. Drive to Haleiwa out of habit and you will be a long way from your instructor.

There is a reason for the detour, and it is the most useful thing to understand before you book.

Every tier runs ninety minutes, and every tier includes the surfboard, the leash and the rash guard. What changes is how many people share the instructor with you. The option you book is what sets the group size: one for a private lesson, two for semi-private, three to five for the small group, and six to fifteen for the large group, which needs at least six people before it runs.

Sessions start at 10:30 in the morning or 1:00 in the afternoon. Private and semi-private lessons add an 8:00 start on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Two Beaches, and the Ocean Picks One

Sunset Suzy's own website is direct about this. The school teaches on both the north shore and the east side of Oahu, and the instructor chooses the spot to suit your skill level and the day's weather and ocean conditions.

The two are not interchangeable. The North Shore cove sits near Haleiwa and works when the swell allows it. On the east side the waves stay small all year, and the water there is shallow enough to stand up in, which is why that beach is on the schedule at all.

Winter is when the difference matters. The operator calls this coastline one of the most dangerous in the world in the wintertime, and writes that beginners should go and look at Pipeline and Waimea Bay, and should not try to surf either one. The sheltered spots behave differently. Even when the outside breaks are enormous, the wave that reaches the inside of a cove can arrive small and rolling.

A current still runs through those coves. By the operator's own account that is the argument for booking a lesson before you rent a board and guess.

The Dogs Come to Work

The dogs are not a marketing flourish. They come down to the beach, they get in the water, and the product listing names them as part of the day.

Suzy describes herself as a former North Shore lifeguard who has been teaching beginners for decades, and says it was the lifeguard training that shaped how she teaches ocean safety. Her own site also says she may not be the one who turns up: when she is sick or away, one of her instructors takes the lesson. The listing is written as though she is always there. Book the school, and treat the named instructor as a possibility.

By her own account she also appeared in Blue Crush and did stunt work on Baywatch Hawaii. That one rests on her telling of it.

Weekdays Only, and a Call the Day Before

Not one of the four options sells a Saturday or a Sunday. The booking calendar runs Monday to Friday, and that holds across every tier and every season currently on file.

Two more rules are built into the way this operator takes bookings. You have to book at least twenty four hours ahead. Separately, the supplier requires you to reconfirm by phone twenty four hours before the lesson, and the listing states that failing to reconfirm may lead to cancellation without a refund.

Those two clocks sit on top of each other. The free cancellation window also shuts twenty four hours out, so the moment you are supposed to be picking up the phone is the same moment the money stops being refundable. Put the call in your calendar on the day you book.

The lesson takes travellers from age four, and anyone under eighteen needs an adult with them. The listing rates the activity as needing a moderate level of physical fitness.

Turtles Turn Up, and Ten Feet Is the Rule

Every option on this listing includes what the operator calls a free turtle tour, and the school's own pages say turtles regularly swim near the lesson spots.

Two things are worth keeping apart. Nobody can promise you a turtle on a given morning. And the operator separately sells a standalone turtle tour that runs two hours with masks and snorkels provided, which is a longer and different outing from the loop folded into a ninety minute lesson. Treat the inclusion as a bonus loop. The two hour tour is a separate purchase.

NOAA asks people in Hawaii to stay at least ten feet, roughly three metres, from sea turtles both on land and in the water, and never to touch, chase or feed them. Hawaiian green sea turtles are protected. Close enough to watch is the only version of close that is legal.

One mismatch is worth naming before you go. The booking page ticks every wheelchair box it offers, including transport and all areas and surfaces, while rating the same activity as moderate fitness. The operator's own website says nothing about accessibility on any of its pages. Those claims do not sit together for an ocean lesson that begins by walking into the sea, so treat the reconfirmation call as the place to get a real answer.

Bring a swimsuit, a towel and sunscreen. Hawaii has banned the sale of sunscreen containing oxybenzone or octinoxate since January 2021, so anything you buy on the island will be free of both, while whatever you packed at home may not be. Food and drink are not included and there is no hotel pickup, so the drive is yours to plan.

Take the H-3 across, come down the windward coast, and look for a highway address well short of any surf town. The wave you learn on is small and it rolls a long way toward the sand. That is the whole point of being on this side of the island.
