Board in New Jersey, Watch Manhattan Switch On Below You

A short night flight whose real planning problem is getting out to the New Jersey airfield first.

Watch Manhattan light up from a New Jersey helicopter.

The flight runs 25 to 30 minutes. It opens over New Jersey with American Dream and MetLife Stadium lit below, then crosses the Hudson toward Manhattan.

The New Jersey base flies three days a week. Friday and Saturday evenings from 6:30 PM, Sunday from noon, all of it ending at 9:00 PM. Check that against your dates before anything else. The rest of the planning is easier to move.

Departures leave from Essex County Airport at 27 Wright Way in Fairfield, New Jersey. The cabin takes up to six, sold by the seat, and one booking can cover a single traveler or the whole aircraft.

Landing and facility fees and the fuel surcharge sit inside the ticket. So does the pilot's live commentary, which carries over noise-cancelling headsets. Hotel pickup and drop-off are not included. The Viator listing puts the flight at 25 to 30 minutes, and the operator's own tour page says 30 to 35.

Getting out to the airfield

Essex County Airport sits 20 miles west of Manhattan. A taxi or rideshare from Midtown runs 45 to 60 minutes in the operator's own estimate, and evening traffic out of the Lincoln Tunnel can stretch that.

The listing also points at the Lakeland Bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd Street. The last bus back toward the terminal leaves Fairfield at 9:35 PM, and the stop is a walk away from the airport itself. Flights here run until 9:00 PM. Work out the ride home before you book the seat.

Inside the cabin

Up to six seats, a climate-controlled cabin, and noise-cancelling headsets that carry the pilot's narration over the rotor. Seats are assigned by weight and balance, and a specific window is never guaranteed.

A camera, a phone and your glasses come aboard. Purses, handbags, camera bags, scarves, hats and loose clothing stay behind in a locker at the terminal. Plan what goes in your pockets.

Check-in, ID, and the weight rule

Bring a government-issued photo ID, passport or driver's license. Without one you will not be allowed to fly, and the seat is not refunded. Every passenger clears a security screening on the way out to the aircraft.

Check-in is at least 30 minutes ahead in the operator's own wording. The Viator listing raises that to 45 minutes for anything leaving after 4:00 PM. Evening departures sit on that side of the clock. Arriving late costs fifty dollars per passenger, and a missed flight is treated as a no-show with no refund.

Weight is a booking question, asked up front. Passengers over 275 lbs (124 kg) buy a second seat at full price. Children aged two and over need their own seat at full fare, and under-twos ride on an adult's lap at no charge.

What moves a flight

Weather can cancel this flight. So can a departure that does not fill. The operator offers an alternative slot or a full refund when either happens, and the listing states outright that sunset views are not guaranteed.

Rescheduling is free more than 24 hours out. Inside 24 hours the operator does not permit changes at all, and a cancellation in that window is charged in full. Viator's cancellation terms run on the same 24-hour line.

The pin above marks MetLife Stadium, one of the first landmarks lit under the aircraft after takeoff. Departures are from Essex County Airport at 27 Wright Way in Fairfield, about 20 miles west of Manhattan, and that is the address to hand your driver.

Bring the camera through screening and keep it against the glass. The stretch worth being ready for is the turn across the Hudson, when Midtown arrives all at once.
