Description

Designated Important Cultural Properties anchor the site, including preserved cell blocks and the historic chapel. Detailed displays across the grounds—and within the dedicated Prison History Museum—use life-sized restored scenes to document the prisoner labor that built the essential road between Asahikawa and Abashiri. Beyond walking through the original buildings, visitors encounter special exhibitions and hands-on workshops.
