Description

Across expansive outdoor grounds, preserved timber structures—including the Five-Winged Radial Cellhouse, administrative hall, and prison chapel—detail the evolution of Japan's penal system past and present. Life-sized mannequins inhabit the wooden cells and work spaces, lending a stark realism to historical scenes of prison staff and inmates. At the on-site cafeteria, visitors can sample reconstructed prison meals based on the exact menu served at today's active Abashiri Prison.
