Bison on Antelope Island, Then Sunset From Buffalo Point

A van ride to Antelope Island to look for bison and pronghorn, ending on a short climb timed for sunset over the Great Salt Lake.

Catch the sunset from Buffalo Point.

Antelope Island sits in the Great Salt Lake, and this tour splits the evening in two. First the van works the island's roads looking for wildlife, then the group hikes up to Buffalo Point to watch the sun set over the water.

The start time slides with the seasons: the operator leaves about three hours before sunset. On the booking calendar that means 3:45 PM in mid-October and 2:00 PM from mid-November. Sunnyside Expeditions runs it in a high-roof Mercedes Sprinter van, collecting guests from downtown Salt Lake City hotels, and the whole outing lasts about four and a half hours.

The booking covers the van, the use of binoculars, and all fees and taxes. Tips are extra, as is parking if you drive downtown to meet the van; the listing points drivers to the Grand America or the downtown Hilton.

Bison Along the Road, and Whatever Else Turns Up

Antelope Island keeps one of the oldest public bison herds in the country. The state park rounds it up once a year, and its notice for the 2026 roundup puts the herd at nearly 800 animals. In the operator's own words, the bison are usually close to the road, and searching for them is part of the trip. Travelers describe herds with calves and the odd animal crossing in front of the van.

The rest is less predictable. Reviewers report pronghorn, mule deer, coyotes and burrowing owls on different evenings, and the listing adds porcupine, bobcat and bighorn sheep to what the guide watches for. Avocets and other shorebirds gather along the edge of the lake, and binoculars are on board for the distant ones.

A Short Climb With a Couple of Steep Stretches

The evening ends on foot. The listing puts the Buffalo Point hike at 0.9 miles round trip with a couple of steep parts on dirt and calls it moderate, while the operator's own page says one mile on easy terrain. Plan around the listing's version: travelers describe a steep, direct climb straight up the side of the peak. Tennis or hiking shoes are what the operator suggests.

The payoff is the sun going down over the lake from the top, and the walk back to the van starts after sunset. The park stays open until 10:00 PM, which leaves time for the drive out after dark.

Gnats and Mosquitoes Need Different Defenses

The listing flags April to June as bug season, and the state park explains what that means. Tiny biting flies the park calls biting midges come out in spring, and the park says insect repellent does not work on them; it recommends fine-mesh head nets. Mosquitoes run from mid-spring into early fall, repellent does work on those, and the park notes that West Nile virus has been found in Davis County.

The operator carries bug spray, plus hats and nets for the gnats. Reviews posted in late September and early October 2025 still mention mosquitoes and credit long sleeves and long pants.

Hotel Pickup, Seasonal Schedules, and Holiday Closures

Pickup is from five downtown hotels named on the listing: The Grand America, the Hyatt Regency, Le Meridien, Asher Adams and the Salt Lake Marriott Downtown at City Creek. Be ready 10 minutes before your tour time. The operator works a 20-minute window, which means the van can arrive up to 10 minutes early or late, and travelers mention a text from the guide beforehand with the spot and time. Put a phone number you will answer on the booking.

The park is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, so tours do not run inside the park on those holidays even if calendar slots appear open online. For late-December dates nearing the close of the season, check conditions before heading out, and remember that full refunds require cancellation at least 24 hours ahead.

The operator calls the island an hour from downtown; travelers who timed the drive usually report about 45 minutes each way, a real share of the four and a half hours. Water and a few snacks are in the van, though the operator asks guests to eat beforehand, and the listing notes a bathroom along the way. The day ends on the drive back toward the city lights.
