Beside a Dog Park, Five Zip Lines Cross Open Water

Five zip lines, a rope bridge and an auto belay jump, strung through a wilderness preserve between Tampa and Clearwater.

Zip five lines across open water.

Oldsmar's Bicentennial Park has tennis courts and a dog park. Past both of them, where the mown grass runs into the Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve, a wooden tower stands with a spiral staircase wrapped around it.

That tower is where the two hours begin. Empower Adventures Tampa Bay strings five zip lines, a suspension bridge, a run of high ropes elements and an auto belay jump across the preserve. Check-in happens under the big open-air pavilion beside the dog park, and the gear comes out there.

This is not a walk-through. Guests spend the whole two hours in a full-body harness, climb a staircase to reach the first platform, and the listing asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness. It also advises against the course for anyone pregnant, anyone with a spinal injury, and anyone in poor cardiovascular health.

Arrival is 30 minutes before the booked start time, and the operator says late arrivals may not be allowed to take part, with no refund.

Five Lines, a Rope Bridge, and One Step Off a Platform

The five zip lines run between 400 and 650 feet. A 200-foot suspension bridge sits among them, along with a set of high ropes elements. The course closes with an auto belay jump, a step off a platform with the device paying out the line.

Two guides work the course with each group, and gear rental is included in the booking. Water comes out on the course.

Closed-Toe Shoes and a Longer Inseam

Gear goes on at check-in. A guide fits the full-body harness and clips on the rest, and that is the moment the clothing rules start to matter. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory, and the operator rules out tank tops, short shorts and wet swimsuits. It suggests a six to seven inch inseam for where the leg straps sit, and asks that long hair be tied back. The listing's own instruction is to prepare as if you were going for a hike in the woods.

The Scale at Check-In Decides Who Rides

The weight range is 70 to 270 pounds, and the operator says both limits are strictly enforced for guest safety. The minimum age is seven. The listing prices a child fare through age eleven and an adult fare from twelve upward, and one booking takes up to eight travelers.

Rain Is Fine. Lightning Is a Wait.

Tours run rain or shine. When lightning arrives, guests are brought down to wait out the storm, and no refund is given for weather. That holds for everything else too: all sales are final, and a cancellation returns nothing. Bookings are confirmed by hand, and the confirmation lands once the operator has checked the slot.

Getting in is the part that trips people up. Drive into Bicentennial Park, follow the road past the tennis courts toward the Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve, and watch for the Empower signs pointing to the parking lot. Check-in is the big open-air pavilion next to the dog park. The course ends where it started, and anyone not riding can wait there.

Gratuities are not included, and the photos the guides shoot are sold separately at the end. The last thing before each step off is the view from the platform, out across the water toward Tampa Bay.
