Description

The park grounds were purchased in 1871 by James Gordon Bennett, a pioneer of American popular journalism. Since opening in 1929, the space has slowly accumulated its history. The Washington Heights Honor Grove Association planted an American Elm here in 1932 to mark the bicentennial of George Washington's birth, and a brick comfort station was added to the north section in 1964.
