Austin's Ghost Stories, Told From a Speakeasy on Congress Avenue

A guided evening walk through downtown Austin's ghost lore that begins and ends at a tavern on Congress Avenue.

Walking Tours of Austin starts this one at the Speakeasy on Congress Avenue and keeps it on foot for ninety minutes, with a guide telling the stories in English. The booking page names five places along the way: the Speakeasy itself, the Driskill hotel, a stretch of Congress Avenue with the Texas Capitol in view, the Paramount Theatre and Sixth Street.

On the listing, only the Speakeasy and the Driskill are marked as stops. Congress Avenue, the Paramount and Sixth Street are walk-bys.

On tone, travelers keep landing in the same place. The stories lean on Austin history, murders and old tragedies, and several reviewers who came for frights called it closer to a history walk.

Booking confirms right away, the ticket comes to your phone, and sales close an hour before each start. The price covers the guide; tips, food and drinks are extra.

Two Hotels, and Two Accounts of the Inside Time

The listing still names the Driskill as a stop. The operator's own pages, revised in 2026, tell it differently. Its FAQ says that, when available, guests may get into parts of the Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta Hotel and the Speakeasy. A February 2026 announcement added the Stephen F. Austin as a stop on this walk, with access to its bar and its balcony over Congress Avenue, and a June 2026 post about the walk says you will hear stories connected to the Driskill.

Plan on hearing about the Driskill, and count any time inside it as a bonus. The lobby visits travelers describe all date from 2025 or earlier; none of the 2026 reviews mention the Driskill.

The operator adds that interior access depends on venue availability and private events. Two travelers in March 2024 said South by Southwest kept the group out of some buildings, and a traveler in February 2025 found the planned buildings closed.

Congress Avenue, the Paramount and Sixth Street

On the listing these three go by on foot. On Congress Avenue it points to the view up to the Texas Capitol. At the Paramount Theatre it promises a look at a ghost photograph, and the operator's June 2026 post describes taking that in from second-floor ironwork overlooking Congress Avenue. A traveler in 2024 named the Paramount as the stop with an actual photograph of an apparition, and reviews from 2024 and 2025 describe guides holding up old pictures on a phone or tablet as they talk.

Hearing the guide is the part to manage. During South by Southwest in March 2024, one traveler could not hear over live music at the Driskill, while a June 2025 traveler on the 9:30 PM start said the guide was easy to hear over the downtown nightlife. Stand near the front.

The Speakeasy Is Where the Walk Starts and Ends

The operator's booking notes say tours begin and end at the Speakeasy Tavern at 412 Congress. The listing gives the Speakeasy twenty minutes inside. A traveler in 2023 described the order: the group walked away for the first story, then came back and went in for the second. The bar is open before the walk, and the listing suggests coming early for a drink or a soda.

Group Size, Kids and Getting Around

The listing calls it a small group, yet a single booking can take twenty-five people, and travelers have counted more on the night: about thirty in October 2025, thirty to forty in November 2024.

Children up to age ten have their own ticket, and every booking needs an adult on it. The operator's tour page lists all ages and its FAQ says the stories avoid graphic content, though its About page still says the night walks are for ages 13 and up. Families with children and teens wrote about it through 2025 and 2026, and a family in June 2026 said the ghost stories and tragedies came without too much for kids.

On access, the two sources differ. The listing's own note says the walk is not wheelchair accessible and calls for moderate fitness and comfortable shoes. The operator's FAQ puts the route at about 1.5 miles at an easy pace, says most routes are accessible though some historic sidewalks vary, and asks travelers to contact it before booking.

📍 Arrive about fifteen minutes before your start at the Speakeasy, 412 Congress Avenue. The listing says to wait inside near the front windows or out front by the Ghost Walk Austin sign. There is no hotel pickup.

As of October 16, 2026, the booking calendar runs an 8:00 PM start Monday through Saturday, adds 7:00 PM and Friday and Saturday 9:30 PM starts on some dates, and lists no Sunday departures. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund; inside 24 hours there is none. The operator says tours run rain or shine, and the listing allows a night to be called off for bad weather or too few travelers.

Book the 8:00 PM start and the last story lands around 9:30 PM back at the Speakeasy, with the rest of the evening still yours.
