An Opera House Phantom and Other Lancaster Ghosts by Candlelight

A costumed guide leads a 75-minute candlelit walk through downtown Lancaster, telling ghost stories rooted in the city's past.

A costumed guide meets the group in Penn Square at 7:30 PM and spends the next 75 minutes walking downtown Lancaster by candlelight. The listing promises tales of eternal vigils, fatal curses and star-crossed lovers, drawn from first-hand accounts and the book Ghost Stories of Lancaster, PA.

The operator describes the walk as a mix of history, folklore and ghost stories, and says each story is documented through interviews and research. Expect a storytelling walk built on local history rather than a night of jump scares.

Tickets are sold per person: adult tickets from age 13 and a lower-priced child ticket for ages 4 to 12. Online booking closes 60 minutes before the start. As of October 26, 2026, the calendar showed walks every night from October 28 through November 1, Halloween included, then Fridays and Saturdays on November 6 and 7 and November 13 and 14, with nothing listed after that.

The Opera House Phantom and the Market Spirits

The listing names two stops. Outside the Fulton Opera House on North Prince Street, the guide tells the tale of its phantom. At Central Market, which the listing calls the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the country, the stories turn to the spirits said to haunt it and the unusual number of hauntings around it. Each of those stops runs about five minutes, and admission to the sites is not included.

The operator's own FAQ puts the route at 8 to 10 haunted locations; the two named stops are only part of the evening. Its Lancaster page also mentions the "Walking Tombstone" and the old jail, and its FAQ says the stories include historic cemeteries.

Meet at the Monument, Finish About Three Blocks Away

The walk starts at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Penn Square, where King and Queen streets meet, across the street from the Marriott hotel and convention center. The operator gives 25 S. Queen St. as the GPS address and asks guests to arrive 10 minutes before tour time.

It finishes outside St. James Church rather than back at the monument. The operator says the end is about three blocks from the start and that guests can ask the guide to walk back with them. It gave that answer to a July 2026 review from a parent who found the walk back to the car in the dark with a child unsettling.

More Stories and History Than Scares

Recent reviews mostly praise the guides as storytellers, and one from July 2026 noted the guide was dressed in character. Three-star reviewers in September 2025 and July 2026 found the walk heavier on local history than on ghost stories, and one suggested calling it a historical tour.

Downtown Lancaster is not quiet at night. Reviews from August and September 2026 mention car and motorcycle noise, and one guest said the walk should not run when a beer festival is in town. An April 2026 review noted the guide paused when traffic noise took over, instead of rushing through.

Under a Mile on Foot, Rain or Shine

The operator's FAQ says the Lancaster route covers an eight-block area and less than a mile of walking, and it recommends comfortable walking shoes. Reviewers still call it a lot of walking, and one in August 2025 said older guests in the group struggled with the guide's pace. The same FAQ says the tours are wheelchair accessible.

Walks go ahead in the rain, and the FAQ tells guests to bring an umbrella; if the weather turns severe, the decision to cancel is usually made at tour time. The operator calls the walk family appropriate and requires anyone under 18 to come with an adult. In June 2025, when protests downtown forced a cancellation, the operator says it texted the phone number guests gave at booking and offered a new date or a refund.
