An Open-Level Dance Session Off Lower Broadway
Collective runs an open-level dance session at Collaborative Arts Project 21 on Lower Broadway, built around learning a piece of choreography together.
💃 A Room That Starts From Zero
🎧 What the Session Is
Collective runs these sessions at open level, which means the choreography gets taught from the count rather than assumed. The room takes people who have never set foot in a dance studio alongside people who trained for years. Nobody is asked to perform anything they have not just been shown, and that is the whole design. The piece builds across the hour, section by section, until the room runs it together at tempo.
🪞 Inside the Studio
You come in off Lower Broadway, change, and find a spot facing the mirrors. The instructor breaks the phrase down slowly, then layers on speed and music. People trade places between runs so the back row gets the front. Everyone gets the count wrong somewhere in the first half hour, which takes the pressure out of the room fast. The session ends with a full run, and a lot of people stay to film it.
👟 What to Bring
The session runs on the evening of Friday, September 18 at 50 Broadway in the Financial District, a short walk from the Bowling Green and Wall Street stops. Come in clothes you can move in and trainers with a sole that turns. Bring more water than you think an hour needs. It fits people who want to learn an actual piece of choreography in one sitting, rather than a fitness class set to music. If you wanted a workout with no steps to remember, this is not that.
