An E-Bike Takes the Climb Out of Red Rock Canyon
Ride Red Rock Canyon's one-way scenic drive on a pedal-assist bike. The hills stop deciding who gets to come.
West of the Strip the city stops without much warning. Casino towers give way to creosote flats, then to a wall of sandstone banded red and cream, with the grey Wilson Cliffs stacked behind it.
The road through it is a 13-mile paved loop that runs in one direction only. All traffic travels the same way around, cyclists included. Nothing comes at you head-on. The pavement climbs for the opening stretch and tops out near 4,800 feet.
On an ordinary bike that climb decides who comes along. A 750-watt pedal-assist motor changes the arithmetic.

This one runs self-guided, and the family that owns EzRideLV handles both ends of it. A van collects you from your hotel, drops the group at the staging point in the Summerlin neighborhood, fits a bike to your size, runs a safety orientation and a short practice ride, and hands over a marked route map. From there the pace is yours.

These are pedal-assist bikes. The motor reads how hard you are working and adds to it, and 750 watts is enough to turn a sustained grade into something closer to flat ground. Assisted speed tops out at 20 miles per hour.
What that changes is who gets to come. The listing rates the ride for all fitness levels, and the motor is the reason that holds up. Someone who would stall halfway up the grade on a rented mountain bike reaches the high point with breath left over.
Frames come in five sizes. On-call support runs for the length of the ride and the operator will bring out a replacement bike. Nobody is expected to patch a tube in the desert.
Weather Decides More Than Fitness

The canyon sits high enough to feel different from the valley floor. The operator puts the gap at up to 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the Strip, which matters between June and September.
Sunrise departures are on the schedule, and in high summer that is the window worth booking. The scenic drive opens at 6:00 AM from April through September.
Winter is the opposite problem. The same elevation that makes July survivable leaves January mornings cold and exposed, and the operator hands out winter gloves and windproof jackets in the cold months. Check the forecast the night before you ride.
The Reservation Cars Need and Bikes Skip
Red Rock Canyon runs timed entry on the scenic drive. From October 1 through May 31, anyone arriving by car between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM needs a reservation booked ahead of time.
Riders are exempt. The requirement covers passenger vehicles, and the park lists walk-in and bike-in visits as not needing a reservation. You arrive under your own power and the question never comes up.
The park entrance fee is charged separately and is not part of the tour price. Carry a way to pay it at the gate.
Who Can Ride
The operator sets limits that are worth checking before you book.
- Minimum height is 5 feet, or 152 centimeters
- Maximum rider weight is 265 pounds, or 120 kilograms, a limit set by battery capacity and available power
- Riders under 14 are not accepted, and riders aged 14 to 18 ride with a parent or guardian
- Closed-toe shoes are required
- Every participant signs a waiver
- The ride is not open to pregnant travelers
- The adult pricing band runs from 18 to 77
The adult band also requires two adults on a booking, even though the overall minimum reads as one traveler. Treat this as a two-person ride. Groups cap at ten.
Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure, and the ride back is arranged the same way it started. One traveler wrote in April 2023 that after two hours of riding, "we texted Lance and he picked us up right away."
A sunrise departure puts you back in the city before midday, dusty, with the canyon road behind you and the afternoon still unspent.
