America's First Municipal Playground With Free Table Tennis

Play across courts, picnic under mature trees, and cool off at a shaded Lower East Side neighborhood park.

Plan a Lower East Side park break.

🏓 Courts, Shade, And Splash

Start at the corner of Canal Street and Essex Street, where Seward Park carries a big piece of New York history with zero fuss. This Lower East Side green space was the first municipal playground in the country, and it still plays like a neighborhood backyard.

Sports courts set the pace for the first round, and a splash pad takes over when the afternoon heats up. Between games, challenge a friend at the free table tennis setup, then drift toward the mature trees that cast a ton of shade across the park. Plenty of benches and picnic tables sit close to the play areas, which makes it easy to keep an eye on kids while you catch your breath.

Seward Park stays open daily from 7 AM to 10 PM. That window leaves room for an early game before work, a lunchtime picnic, or an evening rally after dinner nearby. Pack a snack, claim a table under the canopy, and let the courts decide how long you stay.
