Description

The playground shares its namesake with the adjacent Public School 94, both honoring Civil War Admiral David Dixon Porter. Porter’s career included serving under Farragut at the capture of New Orleans, commanding the Mississippi River Squadron during the Vicksburg Campaign alongside General Ulysses S. Grant, and leading the bombardment of Fort Fisher. After being promoted to full admiral in 1870, he remained the Navy’s most senior officer for 21 years.
