Description
Dating back to 1831, this is one of the oldest squares in the city, originally enclosed by the Common Council. Its most prominent landmark is the Abingdon Doughboy, a World War I memorial presented in 1921 by Governor Alfred E. Smith to a crowd of twenty thousand spectators. The space is styled with decorative iron light-poles and entrance urns, with its upkeep supported today by the Abingdon Square Conservancy.
