A Wooden-Bench Trolley Down Ocean Drive to Vanderbilt's Front Door

Newport keeps its Gilded Age on two roads, and if you drive them yourself you spend the hour watching the road. Viking Tours has been running trolleys past them since 1962. Three hours, ninety of them seated on the trolley, and the ticket into The Breakers already paid.

Ride the trolley down Ocean Drive to The Breakers.

Three hours, and the shape of them is fixed. About ninety minutes ride on the trolley, through the Ten-Mile Ocean Drive and along the Bellevue Avenue mansion row, with a guide talking the whole way. The remaining hour you spend off the trolley and inside The Breakers.

Admission to The Breakers is already inside the ticket price. The mansion is also the one place the trolley stops and lets you out.

Everything boards at Viking Trolley Post 3, at 23 America's Cup Avenue. Viking calls the building the Newport Bus Terminal, formerly the Gateway Visitor Center, and places it next to the Marriott. The listing still prints the older name, so look for the terminal first and for Post 3 second.

What USD 48 covers, in the listing's own order: a ninety-minute narrated trolley tour, a professional guide, and admission to The Breakers. Gratuities are the only line the listing excludes.

One option is sold, and it is this one. There is no shorter version and no upgrade tier to weigh, so the decision is which of the four daily departures suits the rest of your day.

The Ninety Minutes You Stay Seated

The trolleys are the old-fashioned kind: arched windows, forward-facing wooden benches, an aisle down the middle. The listing sells at most twenty-two seats in one booking. Viking's own fleet description puts these trolleys at thirty passengers, so that twenty-two caps your order.

The route is the two roads Newport is known for. The Ten-Mile Ocean Drive runs the southern shore. Bellevue Avenue carries the mansion row. The itinerary marks this whole stretch as a pass-by, so the houses arrive and leave through the window while the trolley keeps moving.

The listing's own figures, ninety minutes on the trolley and sixty inside the house, leave roughly half an hour of the three unassigned. Expect it to go on getting a group of strangers off a trolley and back onto it.

The Hour Inside The Breakers

Sixty minutes is what the itinerary allots at the mansion. The Breakers was Cornelius Vanderbilt's summer house, and the listing describes it as the grandest of Newport's summer cottages and a symbol of the family's standing at the turn of the century. The house stands at 44 Ochre Point Avenue.

The trolley waits at the door, and the guiding inside is the mansion's own. Audio tours of the interior run in English, French, Spanish, German and Chinese. The listing tells you to ask for one on arrival, so the language you want is settled at the door and not at checkout.

An hour walks the principal rooms at a steady pace. It is not enough to also do the grounds and the Cliff Walk edge, so pick one before you go in. Staying past the hour means the trolley leaves without you: Viking asks you to tell the driver in advance, and the way back to America's Cup Avenue is then yours to arrange.

Who Cannot Ride, and What to Arrange First

Children under six are not permitted on the trolley. The listing says so in four separate places, and Viking's FAQ gives the reason in its own words: ninety minutes sitting quietly through Newport history is, in its view, the wrong environment for a small child. From six up, the listing prices a youth band that runs to seventeen.

Access needs one call made in advance. Accessible trolleys run only on the 10:00 and the 1:30 departures. Book one of those two and call (401) 847-6921. The listing asks for twenty-four hours' notice and Viking's own ADA page asks for forty-eight, so work to the longer one. Foldable wheelchairs only, and no mobile scooters, because of the weight limit on the lift.

Before You Book

Four departures run every day of the week: 10:00, 11:00, 12:30 and 1:30. The trolley generally pulls into Post 3 about fifteen minutes before its departure time, so there is a boarding window at the front of the hour you booked.

Cancelling at least twenty-four hours before your departure time returns the fare in full.

The tour holds 4.8 across 1,815 reviews. That score belongs to this trolley tour. Viking also runs charters, weddings and cruise-ship excursions under the same name, and those carry their own records.

The trolley returns to the platform it left from, on America's Cup Avenue, with the harbor across the road. A 10:00 departure has you back a little after one o'clock. The 1:30 puts you down around half past four, which is Newport's best hour on the water anyway. Bowens Wharf is on the same stretch of waterfront, and the rest of the day is unbooked.
