The Copernicus Center sits on West Lawrence Avenue in Chicago's Jefferson Park, inside the former Gateway Theatre. Opened in 1930 as a neighborhood movie palace, the building now runs as a Polish cultural and community center with a full performance calendar.
Its landmark clock tower is a scaled replica of the Royal Castle tower in Warsaw, added in the early 1980s and lit above the Northwest Side skyline. Inside, the restored auditorium hosts concerts, films, dance, and theater, and the annual Taste of Polonia festival packs the grounds each Labor Day weekend with food and live stages.
The lobby keeps its movie-palace details, from the grand staircase to a large portrait of Copernicus. The venue sits near the Jefferson Park transit hub, with the Blue Line and Metra both close.
