🏺 Ceramics With a Past

👜 What's on the Tables

The home decor edition brings out the ceramics, glass and textile dealers, a different crowd from the clothing weeks. Pieces come with small handwritten price stickers rather than tags, and most of it is one of a kind. Mid-century pottery and pressed glass turn up here at a fraction of what a Brooklyn shop asks. New work from local makers sits on the same tables, and a hand-thrown mug can end up beside something from 1962.

🍂 How Sundays Run

You come in off West 77th Street and work through the schoolyard stalls before the indoor rooms. Dealers set out at ten, and the fragile pieces go early. Handling is expected rather than discouraged, and most sellers will tell you what they know about a piece. Ask about provenance and you usually get a real answer, which is half the reason to buy here rather than online. Wrapping is bring-your-own.

📍 Getting There

The market runs on Sunday, September 27 at 100 West 77th Street, a short walk from the 79th Street stop on the 1. Admission is free. Bring a tote with structure. Ceramics travel badly in a soft bag on the subway. It fits people who want to furnish slowly from real objects, rather than order a set that arrives flat-packed. If you wanted matching pieces, this is not that.
