A Storyteller Rides Along From Key Largo to Key West
An app narrates the Overseas Highway while you drive it yourself, each story cued by GPS, one booking for the whole car.
Nobody meets you for this one. You buy it, load it onto your phone, and drive the Overseas Highway yourself between Key Largo and Key West while an app plays a story each time your GPS position reaches the next spot. One booking covers the car, and the booking page now marks the tour as lifetime access with no expiry. A reviewer in October 2025 had to buy it again after a year ran out under the earlier terms. The operator's own tour page counts 185-plus stories; the booking page says more than 70. Both put the driving at two to three hours before any stops.

What arrives after you book is a password, sent by email and text from Action Tour Guide. Install the Action Tour Guide app, sign in with your email, open My Tours, choose Enter Password, then download the tour. The code that comes when you sign in is a one-time login code, separate from the tour password. Do all of it on Wi-Fi before you drive; once downloaded, the tour runs on GPS with no cell signal. It works on iPhone with iOS 15 or later, Android 9 or later, or a GPS-enabled tablet with cellular capability. Entrance fees, parking, food and car rental are not included.

The operator frames the drive around one backstory: the Overseas Railroad that first tied the islands together, and the 1935 hurricane that shattered its rails before the route was reborn as a highway. On its stop list the railroad comes up early in Key Largo and again at the Bahia Honda railroad bridge, which it describes as one of the original bridges built to carry the line. The Seven Mile Bridge runs beside the old railroad span, and crossing it brings stories about Pigeon Key, which the operator calls a ghost town, and Fred the Tree, billed as the Keys' unofficial mascot of resilience. In between come tips on where to pull off, from Big Betsy the Giant Lobster to Anne's Beach and the Turtle Hospital. "The narration chimed in at key locations and was not a constant droning voice," an August 2024 reviewer wrote.
Key West Ends the Drive in a Tangle of Turns

Southbound, the last stretch leaves the highway for Key West's streets: Mallory Square, Zero Mile at the end of the Overseas Highway, the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, the Key West Lighthouse, and finally the Southernmost Point buoy, where the operator ends the tour. This is the stretch where a second person holding the phone helps most. A July 2025 reviewer skipped most of the in-town section, finding the turns hard to follow from the driver's seat, and noted that the narration says to pause at spots like the Hemingway House where a car would block the road. An April 2024 reviewer liked that it said where to turn in Key West.
Pick the Version That Matches Your Direction
The tour runs both ways. Southbound starts at the Key Largo sign on the Overseas Highway, northbound starts in Key West, and the operator's page adds that you can join anywhere along the route as long as you follow it in the indicated direction. The app holds two versions, one starting in each town, and the operator told a January 2026 reviewer that choosing the one that matches your route avoids timing and direction hiccups. That review described narration that came late or pointed to the wrong side of the road. A November 2025 reviewer noticed the stories start a little before the yellow dots on the map, and that driving fast gets you ahead of the speaker.
Count on Bluetooth and the Phone Screen
Audio plays through the phone speaker, headphones, or the car stereo over Bluetooth. The booking page says the audio also plays through an Apple CarPlay or Android Auto display, with the map on your phone. The operator's own tour page says CarPlay and Android Auto are not currently supported and that compatibility is in development, and in July 2025 the operator told a reviewer the app does not support CarPlay. Plan on Bluetooth for sound and a phone mount for the map. Several reviewers say the tour picked up where it left off after a stop; one said it took a while to find their location again.
📍 Southbound start: the Key Largo sign on the Overseas Highway, listed as 106309 Overseas Hwy on the booking page and 106342 on the operator's page. Northbound start: 1400 Whitehead St, Key West, per the booking page, or 1400 Duval St per the operator's page. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund. Access has no expiry, and the booking date does not limit when you use it. Save the windows-down part for the Seven Mile Bridge.
