A San Diego Weekend From Arena Soul to Sleeping on a Carrier
Nov 13–15 in San Diego: Teddy Swims at Pechanga Arena, an overnight aboard the USS Midway, JSTJR at SOMA's Mainstage and Nick Cannon's Wild 'N Out Live at Viejas Arena.
🗓️ Four doors, three nights
Four ticketed things sit inside this San Diego weekend, and they do not belong to the same kind of night out. One is a soul set in an arena, one is a sleepover on an aircraft carrier, one is a club-scale electronic show and one is an improv-and-rap battle in a college arena. What they share is that each asks for a different version of you.
Friday lands first and lands easy. Teddy Swims sings at Pechanga Arena, a room built for a big band and a loud crowd, and the night is a straightforward concert: doors, seats, a singer working through his own catalogue.
Saturday is where the weekend stops behaving. The USS Midway opens after hours for an overnight programme: guided behind-the-scenes tours, berths in the ship's quarters, the flight deck at night, breakfast in the morning. Price runs about $100–$125 per person depending on the party. If a bunk on a carrier is not the plan, the alternative is JSTJR on SOMA's Mainstage the same evening, a club show that starts late and stays loud.
Sunday closes indoors. Wild 'N Out Live takes the television format to Viejas Arena, with improv games and competitive hip-hop battles led by Nick Cannon.
Practical shape: all four run on Pacific time, all four need their own ticket, and Saturday cannot be split if you take the Midway overnight. The calendar below carries the start times.
🎧 What the weekend asks of you
The Midway overnight is the decision that shapes everything else. The programme begins in the early evening and runs behind the scenes and out onto the flight deck, and you sleep aboard before breakfast the next morning. That rules out Saturday night anywhere else, and it makes Sunday start earlier than a concert weekend usually does.
The other three are ordinary nights out, and their rooms explain themselves. Pechanga Arena is the biggest: a sports arena where a soul singer's voice has to fill a bowl. SOMA's Mainstage is the opposite, a club floor with a producer behind the decks and a crowd that arrives later than the listed door time. Viejas Arena on Sunday is a college basketball building turned television studio, with the audience doing half the work.
What is worth planning is the drive, not the tickets. Pechanga and the Midway both sit on the harbour side of the city; SOMA is east of downtown; Viejas is out at San Diego State. Pair Saturday's show with Saturday's venue rather than with Friday's, and treat the Midway as a separate night that ends when you wake up.
