A Red Bank Day Trip: Navesink River Walk, STIR at 2 PM, Then Dinner
One NJ Transit ride ends two blocks from a working theater on the Navesink. The shape of the day is river first, a two o'clock comedy that cooks onstage, and an early dinner before the train home.

🚆 The Train That Sets the Day
NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line runs from New York Penn to Red Bank in about an hour and a half: the 9:57 AM lands at 11:22, the 10:59 at 12:26. An adult one-way ticket is $19.50. Trains back leave Red Bank at 6:35 PM, reaching Penn at 8:09, then again at 7:36 PM. Two River Theater sits one to two blocks from the station, so the day runs without a car.
🌊 River First, Dinner After the Show
Thirteen minutes on foot from the station, Riverside Gardens Park opens onto the Navesink; the borough's Marine Park, at 1 Marine Park, sits right on the river with waterfront access steps from downtown. Dinner comes after the curtain: JBJ Soul Kitchen on Monmouth Street keeps no prices on the menu and asks for a suggested donation, serving dinner strictly 5:00 to 7:00 PM with no reservations accepted (seating is first-come, first-served)—head over promptly after the show to beat the window. Urban Coalhouse, two blocks from the theater, runs to 11 PM on Saturdays.
🍲 What's Cooking Onstage
Melinda Lopez and Joel Perez wrote STIR around two siblings rebuilding their mother's black bean recipe, and the cooking happens on the actual stage: black beans, onions, garlic, green bell pepper and spices release aromas into the seats, so the theater asks patrons with airborne food allergies to weigh that. November 7 is the 2:00 PM fragrance-free matinee in the Marion Huber Theater, listed as limited tickets. Under 35 is $35 with ID, students $25, and regular weekend sections run $55 to $70 and up before a $10.00 service charge.
