A Private Sedona Sunset Hike That Keeps Going After Dark
A private guide times the trail to sunset, then walks you out in the dark with headlamps, a thermal scope and a black light.
In 2014 the International Dark-Sky Association named Sedona the world's eighth International Dark Sky Community, after the city strengthened its outdoor lighting code. Trail Lovers Excursions, which says it holds a Forest Service outfitter permit for the Red Rock Ranger District, builds this private outing around that dark. Its night hikes start about an hour before sunset: you watch the last light leave the red rock, then finish on headlamps.
Nobody outside your booking joins. The operator's own page is clear that this is a night hike rather than an astronomy tour, and that clouds do not undo it: the darkness, the wildlife, the quiet and the sunset carry the outing even when the stars are covered.

The listing runs three hours, which the operator breaks into two hours on the trail and one hour of driving to and from it. Booking closes 48 hours before the start time, and confirmation is manual rather than instant. Single seats are not sold: the smallest booking is two hikers, or four in March 2027, and one booking takes up to 14.

The kit is what separates this from a sunset walk with a flashlight. The listing includes headlamps, a thermal and night-vision monocular, a black light and an echolocation detector, and it says the monoculars carry 4K cameras for recording what you find. The operator's page spells out the use of each: the monocular helps locate animals at a distance, the ultrasonic detector lets you hear bats echolocating overhead, and the black light is for searching out scorpions, which glow under it.
The operator also says plainly that wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. The gear gives the second hour, after the color leaves the sky, something to do besides walk.
One to Three Miles, Matched to Your Group's Legs

There is no fixed trail. The listing names Doe Mountain Trail, off Boynton Pass Road, as its itinerary point, and its description says the trail is selected for your fitness and interests. The Forest Service rates Doe Mountain moderately challenging: 0.7 miles to the top of the mesa, 1.3 miles around its edge and 542 feet of elevation gain. The operator's page for this hike maps three versions, rated easy, moderate and upper moderate, and puts the range at one to three miles with 100 to 500 feet of elevation change. Its route options include scenic loops, summit hikes and vortex areas.
The listing ticks suitable for all physical fitness levels, while its own description says difficulty can range from easy to hard. The easy version is the floor, and the guide sets the route by what your group can handle. The listing also marks the hike as not recommended for pregnant travelers or for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
The Start Time Moves With Sunset, 4:30 to 7:00 PM
Start times on the booking calendar track the sun. As of October 13, 2026, the listing starts at 5:00 PM in January and November, 5:30 PM in February and October, 6:00 PM in March and September, 6:30 PM in April and August, 7:00 PM from May through July, and 4:30 PM in December. The operator's own page prints the same table.
The start time is the pickup time, and the whole outing runs about three hours.
Medical Insurance, Kids and the Tip
The operator's booking page requires every hiker on any of its outings to carry medical insurance, a condition the listing itself does not mention.
The listing books everyone aged 1 to 85 in a single adult band, and the operator lists child carrier packs and car seats by request. Service animals are allowed. Gratuities are not included, per both the listing and the operator's FAQ.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the start for a full refund. If weather cancels the hike, the listing offers a different date or a full refund.
📍 Pickup stands in for a meeting point. For a resort, timeshare or vacation rental in Sedona or the Village of Oak Creek, the listing says the guide meets you at the front desk at the start time, and the operator's FAQ puts it at the valet or arrivals area, in a vehicle marked Trail Lovers Excursions. Arriving from out of town on the day, the operator contacts you before the tour to set a central meeting spot in Sedona. From there, the drive goes to a trailhead picked for your group, and the headlamps come out after sunset.
