A North Beach Walk That Ends at the Alcatraz Ferry

Ninety guided minutes through North Beach to the Pier 39 sea lions, then your included ferry ticket carries you out to Alcatraz.

One booking covers two outings. First comes a guided walk in English that starts beside the firemen statue in Washington Square, steps inside Saints Peter and Paul Church, and ends with the sea lions at Pier 39. Then comes Alcatraz, which you explore on your own with the cellhouse audio tour once the guide has walked you to the ferry.

The walk keeps a schedule. The boat time is open: the listing says your Alcatraz ticket is included but the departure time may vary. Leave the afternoon unbooked.

Four options sit behind the booking button. The basic one pairs the 9:30 AM walk with your Alcatraz ticket. Two others add something after the walk, either a SkyStar Wheel ride or a one-hour Blue & Gold bay cruise. The fourth moves the start to 4:00 PM for an evening on the island. Child tickets cover ages 5 to 11, and adult tickets everyone 12 and up.

From the Firemen Statue to the Sea Lions

The listing gives each stop a time. Fifteen minutes in Washington Square, where the guide covers how the square served as temporary housing after the 1906 earthquake and fire. Fifteen inside Saints Peter and Paul Church for its Italian marble altar and stories that reach Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe. Fifteen at a focaccia bakery the listing dates to 1911, which you enter only if it is open. Ten at a viewpoint on the crooked stretch of Lombard Street, then fifteen with the sea lions at Pier 39.

Those stops add up to seventy minutes of a walk the booking options call ninety, so the rest is time on foot. One traveler in October 2026 wrote: be prepared for hills and stairs. The listing still ticks suitable for all physical fitness levels. The guiding is in English only.

Reviews from before March 2026 describe a Fisherman's Wharf walk, and the booking page's web address still carries that name, so older write-ups cover a different first half.

On Alcatraz, the Audio Tour Takes Over

The guide hands you off at Alcatraz Landing on Pier 33, and the park's rules apply from there. The walk from the island dock to the cellhouse is about a quarter mile with a 130-foot climb, which the park likens to thirteen stories. An electric shuttle runs every half hour for anyone who cannot make that climb. The audio tour is picked up inside the cellhouse and lasts about 35 minutes.

There is no food service on the island, and the park allows eating only on the dock. Food is sold on the ferry each way, and bottled water is fine anywhere. Bring a layer, since the park says the island often runs colder than the mainland.

On a day visit you may return on any ferry, so the afternoon is yours until the island closes, 4:30 PM in fall, winter and spring and 6:30 PM in summer.

SkyStar, a Bay Cruise or the Evening Start

The SkyStar Wheel stands next to Pier 41, 150 feet tall, and its own site lists daily hours of 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The listing says that ticket works any time after the walk. The bay cruise is a one-hour loop with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the listing says its ticket is valid until the end of the year.

The evening version starts at 4:00 PM and runs only on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. As of October 18, 2026, the booking calendar shows it on October 20, 23 and 24, then not again until April 2, 2027.

Closures, Legal Names and the No-Refund Rule

The park says Alcatraz closes from October 26 to November 18, 2026 while the ferry dock's pilings are replaced, and that weather could shift those dates. As of October 18, 2026, the booking calendar shows every day from October 26 through November 19 as sold out, with the walk back on November 20. There are no departures on Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's Day.

All sales are final, with no refund for cancellations. Book under the legal names of everyone going: the listing says names need to match photo ID for adults 18 and over, or the reservation may be cancelled.

Child tickets start at age 5, and the ticket list has no line for anyone younger. The listing also ticks stroller access, while the park says most roads and walking routes on the island have extreme slopes. Food, drinks and tips are not included.

📍 Meet beside the Volunteer Firemen Memorial in Washington Square, a large statue of three firefighters at 600 Columbus Ave, where the guide holds an orange ExperienceFirst sign. The walk does not loop back; it finishes at Alcatraz Landing on Pier 33, and the next thing ahead of you is the island.
