A Maui Surf Lesson That Never Mixes You With Strangers

Soft-top boards, reef booties and a five-to-one instructor ratio at a west Maui break reached by a dirt pull-off.

Book a private Maui surf lesson for your party.

Rivers To The Sea teaches off Highway 30, between mile markers 12 and 12.5, right next to Ukumehame Beach Park. Offshore, peaks break right and left all down the beach, which is how Thousand Peaks got its name. It suits longboarders and beginners, and with that many peaks to go around it feels less crowded than other west-side spots.

Separate parties never share a lesson here. Two of you booking means the instructor has two students. Six of you brings a second instructor along, which holds the ratio at five students to one teacher.

Lessons run seven days a week with three morning starts. The booking below is the semi-private option, quoted per person for two to six people from one party.

The Meeting Point Is a Dirt Strip Beside the Highway

Coming south from Kaanapali the drive is about twenty minutes. From Kihei, Makena or Wailea it runs twenty to thirty. From Paia, Haiku and the north shore, expect thirty to forty. Either approach ends the same way.

You leave the highway onto a dirt stretch between the sand and the road, then follow it until your instructor waves you down. Drivers arriving from the Kihei side pass a paved parking lot first, then use the middle lane to wait for a gap and turn left. Coming the other direction, mile marker 12.5 is the cue to turn right.

The paved lot holds twelve cars. Another eight fit on gravel, there is room along the shoulder, and on a clear day the lot fills early. Hard-packed sand and the beach side of the road both work, as long as you are fully off the pavement.

One traveller described what that looks like on arrival. "When you get to the designated area, it does look like there is nothing there, but someone will be there to greet you and take you down to the beach," deep d wrote in January 2015.

Check-In Is Ten Minutes Ahead, and the Buffer Is Twenty

Three lessons leave each morning, at 7:30, 9:20 and 11:10. Check-in is ten minutes ahead of each one, and the instructor is on the sand at that exact time.

A twenty-minute gap between lessons keeps yours starting on schedule and running the full ninety minutes. Water safety comes first. After that the session works through stance, technique and the etiquette of sharing a lineup.

Every start is a morning one. The advice for this break is to go out early, because the wind here can pick up suddenly and strongly. Summer south swells bring this stretch its most waves and winter its calmer days, and on a larger swell the area throws close-out waves that are not suitable for beginners.

Surf decides the rest. Travellers in 2019 described being moved to a different spot on the day, and another being called ahead of time to reschedule when the waves were running small.

The Rash Guard Stops at Your Hands and Your Neck

The school hands you a soft-top board, protective reef booties, and a long-sleeved rash guard. The booties earn their place: between the sandy shore and the waves sits a shallow band of rock and reef, and the inside of the break runs very shallow. That rash guard covers your back, arms and chest, and leaves your hands, neck and the backs of your legs exposed. Its own advice is to put sunscreen on exactly those places five to ten minutes before the lesson, early enough for it to soak in and stay clear of your eyes.

Three things you bring yourself:

  • Sunscreen
  • Swimwear or board shorts
  • A towel

Food, drink and hotel pickup are also on you. There is no tap at the turnoff, and one traveller in February 2015 noted the instructors had seven gallons of fresh water on hand for a rinse at the end.

Seven Years Old Is the Floor for This Lesson

The minimum age here is seven. Any fitness level is workable, service animals are allowed, and a pram or stroller for an infant or small child can come along.

One booking can be a single person or a party of six, and the rate is per head either way. Tide and Kiva Rivers, twins raised on Maui, founded the school. It carries a 4.99 rating across 104 reviews.
