A Historic Railway Walk Keeps Manhattan History Underfoot
Wander past lush plantings and public art above the West Side, with old rail tracks still set in the path.
🌿 Industrial Roots, Living Gardens
The High Line lifts a walk above the West Side onto a former railway, now thick with lush gardens and public art. Original railroad tracks stay embedded in the walkway, threading through the plantings and keeping the industrial past right underfoot. Hudson River views open up along the way, and the elevated vantage gives a clear sight of the Empire State Building.
Height changes how the city reads from here. Buildings from different decades line up close enough to compare, and the stroll becomes a slow study of how Manhattan architecture has shifted over time. Beds of flowering plants and tall grasses press against the railings, while wide wooden decking leaves room to stop and look down the avenues.
The path is open daily from 7 AM to 10 PM, a long window for an early walk before work or an after dinner stroll above the streets.
