A Harlem Walk Ending at the Apollo or Sunday Gospel
Harlem's churches, row houses and jazz history with a local guide. The Sunday version ends at a gospel service.
The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, one of the New York Public Library's research libraries, stands at Malcolm X Boulevard and West 135th Street. Monday to Saturday, this two-hour walk starts outside it. A local guide from New York City By Foot then leads a group of up to 18 past Harlem's churches, row houses and an old jazz street, finishing outside the Apollo Theater.
Reviewers on the listing name their guides, most often Lady Altovise and Ronald. One wrote: "I also appreciated hearing from a long time Harlem resident."

This listing has two versions. Monday to Saturday, the history walk starts at 9:45 AM or 2:00 PM and costs USD 39 for adults and USD 29 for children 15 and under. Soul of Harlem: Harlem History, Music & Gospel ExperienceTwo-hour guided walk in Harlem, from the Schomburg Center to the Apollo Theater Monday to Saturday. The Sunday version ends at a gospel service.www.viator.comStrivers' Row, Swing Street and the Apollo

The weekday route makes its two longest stops at Abyssinian Baptist Church on West 138th Street, about 30 minutes, and at Strivers' Row, about 20 minutes. New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission counts Abyssinian, organized in 1808, among the city's oldest congregations. Its present church was dedicated in 1923. Strivers' Row is a historic district of row houses built in the 1890s, with shared rear alleys and courtyards, and one alley gate still carries a carved sign: Private Road, Walk Your Horses.
The walk passes Bill's Place on West 133rd Street, which the listing places on Harlem's original Swing Street and names as the club of Harlem jazz musician Bill Saxton. One reviewer wrote: "we saw the exact location where Billie Holiday sang and was discovered." The route passes Sylvia's restaurant and ends outside the Apollo Theater, without going in. Two reviewers, in September 2025 and August 2026, found the theater under renovation.
Sundays: A Shorter Walk, Then Gospel at Memorial Baptist

The Sunday 9:45 AM version meets outside the Apollo Theater on West 125th Street and covers a different part of Harlem: the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building, the Studio Museum in Harlem, a historic mosque and the Malcolm Shabazz Harlem Market. It ends inside Memorial Baptist Church on West 115th Street, with about an hour at the gospel service, and the price includes priority access to that service.
The operator asks guests to dress for church, silence phones and follow the congregation's guidelines, and says guests can stay for the full service or leave with the guide. One reviewer wrote: "We thoroughly enjoyed the church service at the end of our tour!"
Who Leads the Walk and Who It Suits
The guide changes from date to date. Reviewers name Lady Altovise most often, along with Ronald and Meredith, and the operator's own page for the Sunday version names Lady Altovise as its guide. Most reviews praise the guides by name. A July 2026 reviewer gave three stars, writing that the walk centered on notable Black residents more than on how Harlem itself became a center of Black American history.
The listing rates the walk suitable for all fitness levels and marks it wheelchair and stroller accessible. The operator puts the distance at about 1.5 miles of city sidewalks and asks guests with access questions to contact it before booking. Service animals are allowed.
Find the Right Corner Before You Go
Monday to Saturday, the guide waits at the Schomburg Center, not at the Apollo. A September 2025 reviewer was told the group met at the Apollo, got a text from the guide correcting it and joined at the Schomburg shortly after 2:00 PM. Another reviewer who ran late wrote that the guide "kindly texted me with meeting instructions."
The listing does not cancel for weather, and reviewers describe walking in rain and in cold. The operator suggests comfortable walking shoes, water in warm months and arriving a few minutes early. Gratuities are not included.
