A Free Diwali Day Fills 37th Avenue With Chai and Henna
A Sunday morning street festival on 37th Avenue with free chai, a rangoli workshop, henna and a 12:50 raffle in the Outer Sunset.
🪔 The Diwali Market
🎶 What Happens on the Block
Sunset Mercantile runs its fourth Diwali on the same block as the weekly farmers market, and 37th Avenue between Ortega and Quintara becomes the festival floor. Live music, a sari demo, and cooking demos are all on the bill, and produce stalls stay open beside them. Detailed performance and workshop times have not yet been announced, so stage times stay loose and the open street market remains the anchor.
🎨 Hands-On Stops
Start at the Sunset Mercantile Artship for the rangoli workshop, then head next door for diya decorating and henna. The raffle tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20, available at the Info Booth, Sunset Emporium, or via Venmo (@sunsetmercantile); sales close at noon ahead of the 12:50 drawing. While admission is free, food, Diwali sweets, and farm produce from independent vendors are paid out of pocket.
🎫 Timing, Transit, Fit
The festival runs from 9 am to 2 pm on Sunday, November 8, on 37th Avenue between Ortega and Quintara. Muni lines 7, 29 and 48 serve the area, and organizers note plenty of street parking surrounds the market. Dogs must stay on the sidewalk outside the stalls, and the entire space is smoke-free—making it an easy morning for families and neighborhood strollers.
