A Free Audubon Bird Walk Around Kenneth Hahn's Lake

A free Audubon morning around a man-made lake and restored sage scrub, with binoculars handed out at the kiosk.

Binoculars are provided on site.

🐦 Sunday Walk

⏱️ Eight to Noon, Not Four Hours of Walking

The listing runs from 8 a.m. to noon, and that is the window the leaders keep, not four hours of walking without a stop. The walk covers landscaped parkland, an artificial creek, the lake, and natural and restored coastal sage scrub within the Baldwin Hills. Binoculars are provided for beginners and anyone without a pair. The route stays inside the park, a few minutes off South La Cienega Boulevard.

🔭 Birds That May Turn Up

Audubon's own note says leaders are likely to see many of the resident birds, and nothing past likely is promised on a given morning. Audubon names Black Phoebe, Cassin's Kingbird, California Towhee and Red-tailed Hawk among the residents the walk is likely to see. The Western Tanager newsletter lists seasonal birds that may also turn up.

💵 Free Walk, Paid Parking

Check in at the entrance kiosk at 4100 South La Cienega Boulevard a few minutes before 8. The walk itself is free and needs no advance sign-up. Parking is separate and billed by the vehicle at the gate: 10 dollars on the current Los Angeles County Parks fee schedule, 8 dollars for a senior 65 or older or a driver with a disabled placard, and Audubon's own notice still lists 7 dollars. The gate sits between Obama Boulevard (formerly Rodeo Road) and Stocker Street. Ages 6 and up, no pets or small children, and a hat and water for the morning.
