A Five Kilometre Loop That Ends in Cake
A five kilometre route circles Governors Island and finishes at a cake table, with a picnic spread laid out afterwards.
🍰 The Finish Line Is a Cake Table
🏃 What the Morning Involves
Five kilometres is a little over three miles, and the island route runs flat the whole way with the harbour on one side. Nobody is chasing a personal best here. The cake table is the point, and the run is the thing you do to earn it. Bakers bring seasonal work rather than packaged slices. Walkers finish the loop too, and the table stays out for them. Slices go out until the table is cleared, with no ticket needed at that end.
🚢 Getting Onto the Island
Governors Island sits a short ferry ride from Lower Manhattan and from Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the boat is the only way across. Cars stay on the mainland. Ferry queues on a Saturday morning build well before the first sailing. The island has no through traffic, which is why a five kilometre loop works at all. Food vendors cluster near the ferry landing rather than along the route. Return sailings run through the afternoon, and the last one is worth checking.
🎒 Before You Go
The run starts Saturday, October 17 at nine in the morning. Allow an extra half hour for the ferry crossing and the walk from the landing. Harbour wind makes October feel colder on the island than on the mainland. Bring a layer you can tie around your waist once you warm up. Anyone expecting a timed race with splits and corrals should treat this as a social loop instead. Bag storage on the island is limited. Travel light off the boat.
