A 1929 Movie Palace Still Lighting Peachtree Street
Catch a touring Broadway show or concert beneath a starlit ceiling inside a restored 1929 Moorish movie palace in Midtown Atlanta.
🎭 Under a painted sky
The Fox Theatre opened in 1929 as a Moorish-revival movie palace on Peachtree Street, and it still runs as one of Atlanta's busiest stages. Its grand auditorium was built to feel like an open-air courtyard, with a domed ceiling of projected stars and drifting clouds above arched balconies.
A restored Möller pipe organ known as Mighty Mo rises from the orchestra pit before select screenings, and the towering minarets and striped brick facade trace back to a design meant to evoke a desert palace. A grassroots Save the Fox campaign kept the wrecking ball away in 1974.
Today the calendar runs from touring Broadway productions and Atlanta Ballet to rock and comedy bookings. Arrive early to walk the arcade lobby and Egyptian Ballroom before the house lights dim.
