🎬 Under the dome

The Castro Theatre is a 1922 movie palace at 429 Castro Street, its vertical neon blade a fixed marker on the Castro's main strip. Architect Timothy Pflueger designed the interior, where Spanish, Asian, Italian, and Art Deco details gather under a lavish domed ceiling.

Programming runs from repertory film to concerts, comedy, and drag, and a Wurlitzer organ still plays the room before many screenings. A restoration with Another Planet Entertainment reworked the space for standing shows alongside seated cinema, and silent films screen with live musical accompaniment.

The palace holds a 4.7 rating across more than 2,700 reviews and remains a landmark of the Castro's LGBTQ history. Show formats, seating, and start times change by event. Each night's listing carries the details.
