Chicago River South Bank Walk With Boat Tours and Public Art

Start at North State Street, linger at The Marina, The Cove, and The Jetty, then add a meal or a boat tour.

Start your walk at State Street.

🚶 Follow the South Bank

Chicago Riverwalk puts the river at the center of a downtown wander. This continuous pedestrian route follows the south bank of the main branch, with the water alongside you as you move through the Loop. North State Street gives you a starting point for an outing that can unfold on foot.

The route includes The Marina, The Cove, and The Jetty, distinct public spaces that give a walk several places to linger. Public seating makes stopping part of the outing, while landscaping and public art add more to explore between stretches on foot. Take your time moving between those spaces rather than treating the path as a straight line to finish.

Restaurants bring a meal into the same waterfront outing, and architectural boat tour departures offer another way to experience the river. Keep your plans centered on a stroll, settle in for something to eat, or pair the path with a trip on the water.
