Compost is what brings most people to Know Waste Lands, a yard at 1309 Dekalb Avenue in Brooklyn. Gardeners report the BK ROT batch makes plants grow remarkably large. Doors open Thursday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Saturday 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Sunday 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Skip the compost run and the yard still works as a simple place to sit for a while.
From nursery to bed
A corner plot at 451 Bedford Avenue, La Casita Verde is treated as a candidate for permanent park open space. Art and design programs run alongside the ecological work, and visitors can pick up gardening practice and the case for composting. The gate opens April through September, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Arrive outside that window and the corner stays shut.
